Created in His Image

Created in His ImageGenesis 1:27

So God created human beings in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

What Does Created in His Image Mean to You?

Sometimes when I feel down and distant from God, it does me well to remember that I created in His image. I’m not a mistake, and I’m not an animal, so I shouldn’t act like one! Instead, you when I have been created for a higher purpose, which is to worship God in Spirit and Truth for ever and ever.

Later on in Genesis you believe that Adam and Eve allowed sin into their lives, and corrupted and beautiful image of God and mankind should be. But sin did not “unmake” them, and it did not lower us to the level of other created beings. It may have tainted us, and separated us from God, but it did not deflect us from our primary calling of worshiping Him.

[simpleazon-image align=”left” asin=”1597814407″ locale=”us” height=”160″ src=”http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51R26WZVH2L._SL160_.jpg” width=”103″]

So when you lead worship, remember that you are created in the image of Almighty God, and so are the people you are leading in worship! We are called to worship the Lord, we will be doing it for eternity and when we worship Him I believe that we moved closer to that perfect image of God we were before the fall of mankind.

So worship leading is not just something you do on a Sunday, it is a call to greatness and a restoration of the image of God in our lives. As we worship Him we learn more about Him and grow closer to Him.

When we lead worship we are doing what we were created originally to do, and we become created in His Image, the image of God that He wants us to be.

Embarrassment in worshipWorship leading should never be about you but rather about God, and leading people into His presence.  That being said, we are all human and hate being embarrassed, even when it is our own stubbornness or ignorance that causes the embarrassment!  This article is about the top five potential sources of embarrassment you can face when you are worship leading, and how you can avoid them!

1.    Ignore What Your Pastor Asks For

When your senior pastor directs you in a certain way, you need to honour him and be obedient, even if you don’t agree with him!  If he is taking the service in a different direction, it is up to him to make that decision, and to bear the consequences.  If you disobey him, then you will probably be embarrassed with the results, and you will not do your relationship with him any good either!

2.    Choose New Songs Nobody Knows

A classic mistake made almost every Sunday, worship leading is not about teaching new songs, it is about leading in worship.  People take weeks to learn a new song, so just because you know and love new material, don’t think the congregation shares your enthusiasm!

New songs are great and keep our worship leading fresh and new, but the older songs that people know and love are what really lifts worship, and ministers to our congregation.  I always counsel young worship leaders to introduce new songs very slowly, and use songs people know and love for the bulk of any worship leading.  Using too many new songs will usually have congregations disengage from worship as they try to learn new material, so make sure you avoid this common pitfall.

3.    Go Too Long

Asking worship leaders to judge the length of a worship service is like asking a drug company how effective their drug is!  If you want to avoid major embarrassment, make sure the time you lead for is shorter rather than longer.  If the pastor has to stand up and give you the eye, you have gone way too long.  It is far better to have him ask you to continue, than ask you to stop!

4.    Leave People Standing for Too Long

Worship should be enjoyed, not endured!  Sometimes worship leaders leave people standing so long it is like an endurance test.  Joy, peace and tears are the signs of a great time of worship.  Sore legs are not!

5.    Underprepare

Perhaps the biggest and most embarrassing mistake is when you under prepare.  We tend to do this as we gain more experience, mainly because we become complacent and rely on our own abilities rather than totally seeking the Lord.

We must prepare individually, spending quality time with the Lord in prayer as we choose songs, as we prepare for the morning and even during worship leading.  We also need to prepare properly as we organize our team, working out arrangements and harmonies.  Failure to put in enough preparation will always leave you open to mistakes, and some of these can be pretty embarrassing!

Worship Leading needs preparation

You need to prepare, both for the team and in your own heart, and it needs you to choose the right songs, for the right length of time as you listen to the Lord and obey your pastor.  Cut these five mistakes out, and you will become more confident, and even more powerful in your worship leading.

worship leadingIf you have been worship leading for a while, then you are going to face this at some point… it’s Sunday morning, it’s early on and you do not feel well, however you have a responsibility to the Lord, the Pastor and the church to be leading worship, and doing it skillfully.  Now, it doesn’t matter how long you have been leading, even experienced worship leaders confront days like this!  So I would like to cheer those of you who meet the week in, week out, every Sunday, 2 or more services that we very much require to make sure does not turn into a tedium!

When you are Worship Leading You Just Can’t be Flat!

There are many reasons why, when we face the potential of worship leading, we can feel down.  It can be as straightforward as coming off a late evening, feeling worn-out, feeling sick or just being very tired, right through to having major events disturbing our sense of joy, things like marriage trouble, the a friend dying, or more commonly a fight with someone in your band just prior to when you are going on.  Trust me, this last one happens more often than you would think!

In my case, because I travel and minister all over the world, jet lag is a big one.  At times like these sheer tiredness can leave you feeling fatigued, lackluster and a bit down or miserable when it comes to leading worship.

Uninspired is often a good description, and as you look around at the others in the worship band, you might recognize that many of them struggle in their skills, and they are looking to you for inspiration… something you feel completely incapable of giving! Maybe they too are fatigued and lethargic.  Perhaps being down and flat is infectious!

What Can You Do About It?

When this happens to me, I pray and asked the Lord to assist.  I realize that, when we are weak, He is strong (2 Cor 12:10).  I realize again that this whole vocation of worship leading is not about me, and how I feel, it’s about Him!  I  step back and take a good, extensive look at myself, and realized that in truth I am merely a servant, not a singer, not a guitarist and definitely not a star!  I recognize that, no matter how I feel inside, I am required to change my way of thinking and continue to serve, no matter what the price.

If you do this, ignoring your own feelings , then the Lord will start to move with magnificent power, firstly in your own heart, and then in the hearts of the singers and musicians.    Whether we use our hands, feet or voices, all of us above all use our hearts, and this is the appropriate attitude to worship leading as a servant.

If you rely fully on the work of the Lord, from the very first song you could feel the presence of the Lord, and His delight at our change of heart, and at our choice to do our best no matter what we felt at that moment.  In our weakness, He shows Himself strong, and we are rewarded with a magnificent and very intimate time of worship leading.

So, fellow worship leaders, I write this highly frank, open and graphic article to motivate you, and to tell you that, even if you are feeling downhearted, fatigued and uninspired, you are not alone.  All worship leaders feel this at some stage, all of us labor to keep the flame of inspiration burning bright, and we all need to be reminded that worship leading is never about us and our talents or enthusiasm, it is, and always ever will be, first and foremost about HIM!

Worship Leading MistakesBefore we recorded our latest worship leader podcast, I was thinking about how often we just repeat the same worship leading mistakes.  what prompted me to think about this was that I had just bitten the inside of my mouth… Ouch.  However, the area became inflamed and swollen, and I went on to bit the exact same spot 7 times in a row!!!!

Super Ouch!!!

Sometimes We Repeat the Same Worship Leading Mistakes Too!

Like me biting my mouth over and over again, it seems we often repeat the same mistakes, even if they result in pain and hardship!  What in the world prompts us to do this?  Do we think that if we do it often enough, maybe we will get a different outcome?  According to Einstein, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result.”  If we are doing things in our worship leading that do not seem to be resulting in deeper worship, maybe it is time to stop and have a good look at ourselves, and maybe even pray for wisdom!

Why We Often Repeat the Same Worship Leading Mistakes

There are several reasons why we repeat our previous mistakes, and no, it does not necessarily mean that we are actually insane.  Here’s a few that spring to mind…

1. Tradition

Sometimes we just keep doing the things we always have because that’s what we have always done!  Of that’s what our fathers, or their fathers did.  Some of our frequent worship leading mistakes are due to the inability to bring change.  What worked 50 years ago does not necessarily work today.  Yet the Word of God is unchanging and lives forever, not our man-made traditions.  Now, not all traditions are bad, please do not get me wrong on this, but some of them are at best counterproductive and at worst destructive to modern worship leading.

2. It Has Worked Before

We try it once, and things seem to work well.  We then figure that if we do the same thing every time, we force the Lord to show up.  Folks, it simply is not true!  Some of the biggest worship leading mistakes I have ever seen have been based on something that once worked, but has been done to death!

This is especially true of open worship, where as much as we want to be free and creative, we cannot help ourselves by arranging bouts of spontaneity in advance!  Be wary of thinking something will work because it did in times past.  If you try it once or twice and things don’t seem anointed, then don’t go back to do more of it hoping things will change!

3.  Habit

Habits can be good or bad, and sometimes it is really hard to kick a habit.  Sometimes our worship leading mistakes are repeated simply because we are familiar with doing things a certain way, and we lead worship almost on autopilot.

4. Panic

If things go wrong we often panic, and when we panic we often fall back on things we are familiar with, some of which may be worship leading mistakes.  We can combat this in two ways: react in a more prayerful manner, and avoid the cause of the panic by rehearsing and working harder to get things right.

Training Helps Reduce Worship Leading Mistakes

The right type of training can help to reduce those persistent worship leading mistakes.  It allows us to become more confident as we lead, and more able to handle any potential problems or difficulties.  The whole idea of worship leader training is that the techniques and tips we teach become automatic, so that if things go wrong you are able to handle the situation in a godly and capable way.

So please, don’t keep biting the inside of your mouth over and over again!  It hurts, it ulcerates and it is just plain silly!  Decide now to not be content making the same worship leading mistakes, and ask the Lord what steps you need to take to avoid them in the future.

This worship leading podcast could be the most important one you ever hear… how to bring the presence of God into your worship leading. Now, many of us are good players, good singers and have a great stage presence as well, but this is simply not enough! I have seen hundreds of worship eladers do their thing, and very few have a tangible, unforced, mind-blowing presence of God in their services!

Worship Leading PodcastThat’s what this worship leading podcast is all about!

It is not tips or tricks, not even techniques, but an honest and wholesome look at how you can bring an overwhelming presence of the Lord in your service. Not manufactured, not forced and not faked, but a genuine, holy, life-changing presence of God, that’s what this pod is all about… oh, and we have some fun too (as usual!).

So settle back, listen to this very special worship leading podcast and step out in faith believing for an overwhelming presence of God the next time you lead!
