worship leader podcastThis hard-hitting worship leader podcast asks the direct and slightly uncomfortable question, “You look great on Sunday, but what about the other 6 days?”

Is what you show the congregation on Sunday the real you, or is it something you dress up and reveal to the crowd, then put away for the week?  Are you the same person in your devotions, with your family, in your job or at your Bible Study as you are on stage?

This worship leader podcast shows you how to live a righteous life on and off the stage!

[simpleazon-image align=”none” asin=”B002VYI09G” locale=”us” height=”160″ src=”http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51rcCoONmlL._SL160_.jpg” width=”160″]And that’s what serving the Lord should be about.  You need to have integrity on and off the stage, you need to treat people well and honour God in every aspect of your life, not just when you are up in front of the crowd!  Jesus condemned the Pharisee in Luke 18, so how can we have any questions as to how He feels about us if what people see in front of them on stage is not reflecting the reality of our walk with Jesus.  This pod, open and honest, is a ‘must listen to’ if you really mean business with God, and if you want your worship leading career to rise to new heights in the Lord!

And don’t forget, it is possible to download lots of pods totally free either from this site, or it is easy to download free of charge from iTunes, or subscribe to it which means you don’t miss any episode ever!  Nearly every week there is a special edition of this pod coming at you, so subscribe on iTunes and be part of our worship leader community.  If you like us, and I hope the majority of you do, PLEASE LEAVE A REVIEW so iTunes knows that we’re helping you along!   Whether you are driving to work, mowing the lawn or simply chilling out (maybe with a nice cup of tea!), let us teach you, brighten up your entire day and maximize the use of the time you have got for the Lord!

How to Lead WorshipVery few people can tell you how to lead worship if you do not play an instrument. Many of the great worship leaders you hear of today are also musicians, and many of the most songwriters as well, so clearly there is an advantage if you play an instrument when learning how to lead worship.

As a worship leader for over 20 years, I find it much easier to lead worship if I am playing my guitar. Having my own instrument allows me to control the ebb and flow of music, to create the atmosphere that I feel is necessary, and to control the pace and key of the song. My guitar serves as a bridge between the singers and musicians in the worship team, and therefore, if you can play an instrument, I recommend that you lead worship from your chosen instrument.

Learning How to Lead Worship Without Playing an Instrument is Hard, but Not Impossible

Learning how to lead worship if you are unable to play an instrument is difficult but it is not impossible. The jump you need to make mentally is that you are doing more than singing. You have to take control of the situation, and lead your band and singers in the direction you feel in the Lord the service needs to go.

Here are some steps which may help you when leading without an instrument…

  1. Choose songs carefully, but choose them as a musician would! Make sure that you choose them incompatible keys, and do your best to select songs that are in keys which lead comfortably into each other. I like to start any lower key like F, and progress through the key of G and then finish in the key of A. This is a nice and gentle progression throughout song service.
  2. Talk to your musicians. Talk to them before the program begins, clearly outlining the direction each song will take, and the number of times you will sing each session of the song. This way you can control the direction of the song service despite not holding an instrument to coordinate this.
  3. Liaise with one member of the band. While it is great to communicate with all the band, make sure you select one person to act as a linchpin between you and the rest of the musicians.
  4. Talk to your musicians during the service. As a singer, the easiest way to communicate with your band is to pull the microphone away from your mouth and speak directly to them of mic. This way you can communicate what you want, when you want and be able to lead and guide them directly during the song itself.

Although learning how to lead worship when you are not playing an instrument is more difficult, it also opens great possibilities to concentrate on your singing and leading, and to move about in a way that is not possible when you are playing. It allows you to better communicate with the congregation and, if you learn how to communicate with your worship team effectively, you can certainly become a competent amazing worship leader, whether you play an instrument or not.

You can become an effective and powerful worship leader whether you play an instrument or simply singing when you lead. Learn how to lead worship by learning the right techniques and communicating effectively with your worship team.

Worship Leader PodcastThis controversial Worship Leader Podcast is about being professional.  Now we are the first to admit that serving the Lord in this ministry is not about professionalism, but some aspects of being a professional (and the pod team discuss this) are worth having in your life.  Does this mean you can act like you are higher than others, or is being a true professional more about serving than how good you are?

In an age where Christian ministry is becoming more and more professional, we explore whether this is good or bad, and how you can lift your game as a worship leader without compromising your standards and attitude.

So if you want to improve your ministry, this is one worship leader podcast you do not want to miss!

Embarrassment in worshipWorship leading should never be about you but rather about God, and leading people into His presence.  That being said, we are all human and hate being embarrassed, even when it is our own stubbornness or ignorance that causes the embarrassment!  This article is about the top five potential sources of embarrassment you can face when you are worship leading, and how you can avoid them!

1.    Ignore What Your Pastor Asks For

When your senior pastor directs you in a certain way, you need to honour him and be obedient, even if you don’t agree with him!  If he is taking the service in a different direction, it is up to him to make that decision, and to bear the consequences.  If you disobey him, then you will probably be embarrassed with the results, and you will not do your relationship with him any good either!

2.    Choose New Songs Nobody Knows

A classic mistake made almost every Sunday, worship leading is not about teaching new songs, it is about leading in worship.  People take weeks to learn a new song, so just because you know and love new material, don’t think the congregation shares your enthusiasm!

New songs are great and keep our worship leading fresh and new, but the older songs that people know and love are what really lifts worship, and ministers to our congregation.  I always counsel young worship leaders to introduce new songs very slowly, and use songs people know and love for the bulk of any worship leading.  Using too many new songs will usually have congregations disengage from worship as they try to learn new material, so make sure you avoid this common pitfall.

3.    Go Too Long

Asking worship leaders to judge the length of a worship service is like asking a drug company how effective their drug is!  If you want to avoid major embarrassment, make sure the time you lead for is shorter rather than longer.  If the pastor has to stand up and give you the eye, you have gone way too long.  It is far better to have him ask you to continue, than ask you to stop!

4.    Leave People Standing for Too Long

Worship should be enjoyed, not endured!  Sometimes worship leaders leave people standing so long it is like an endurance test.  Joy, peace and tears are the signs of a great time of worship.  Sore legs are not!

5.    Underprepare

Perhaps the biggest and most embarrassing mistake is when you under prepare.  We tend to do this as we gain more experience, mainly because we become complacent and rely on our own abilities rather than totally seeking the Lord.

We must prepare individually, spending quality time with the Lord in prayer as we choose songs, as we prepare for the morning and even during worship leading.  We also need to prepare properly as we organize our team, working out arrangements and harmonies.  Failure to put in enough preparation will always leave you open to mistakes, and some of these can be pretty embarrassing!

Worship Leading needs preparation

You need to prepare, both for the team and in your own heart, and it needs you to choose the right songs, for the right length of time as you listen to the Lord and obey your pastor.  Cut these five mistakes out, and you will become more confident, and even more powerful in your worship leading.

Worship Leader PodcastThis is definitely a worship leader podcast that affects ALL or us!  How do we best manage our time, both for ourselves, our families, our teams, our church and our relationship with God?  Hey, I am the first one to put up my hand and say I have trouble getting this bit right, but if you are finding yourself tired, run down, burnt out or just stressed out, this is certainly on of the best pods you will hear!

Do you find yourself out too many nights in a week, or do you find large amount of time that you and others commit to practices gets wasted or abused by others?  Are you making time for what is really important, or just dealing with the urgent?  These and many other questions you might have about time management in your worship leading, and indeed across your whole life, are discussed here in this week’s pod.

If you cannot find time to listen to this, chances are this is exactly the worship leader podcast for you!  It will be fun, slightly crazy and definitely worthwhile, and we even get to welcome back Suzie to the pod, so there is every reason in the world to download and enjoy the Bigger than EVER worship leader podcast!

Serving Worship Leader PodcastThis worship leader podcast is not really about tennis, although my game could certainly do with me improving my serve.  Instead, it is about how you can serve selflessly, without being abused by people!  Mark 10:45 says that even Jesus did not come to be served, but to serve and give His life, so we are called to the same thing.

In worship leading, it is so easy to believe your own hype, and somehow think you are a star, rather than a servant.  Your church may feel big, and you may be the biggest fish in the pond, but compared to the rest of the world,  it really is a small pond, and we need to be the servants of our pastors and congregations not the star of the show.

However, sometimes we serve and people around us, even our leadership, can take advantage of us and our serving heart!  So, we also explore how you can serve without being taken advantage of by others in this pod, so if you are a servant, and all of us are, this definitely is a worship leader podcast not to be missed.  Be humble and ready to receive, as well as ready to serve and your ministry will grow beyond your wildest dreams as you open your heart to this timely and powerful information!

So kick back, grab a cup of tea or coffee and enjoy a few crazy minutes with the team that always loves and supports you! And don’t forget, you can download lots of pods for free either from this site, or you can download for free from itunes, or subscribe to it so you don’t miss any episode ever!  Nearly every week there is a special edition of the pod coming at you, so subscribe and be a part of our worship leader community. worship leadingIf you have been worship leading for a while, then you are going to face this at some point… it’s Sunday morning, it’s early on and you do not feel well, however you have a responsibility to the Lord, the Pastor and the church to be leading worship, and doing it skillfully.  Now, it doesn’t matter how long you have been leading, even experienced worship leaders confront days like this!  So I would like to cheer those of you who meet the week in, week out, every Sunday, 2 or more services that we very much require to make sure does not turn into a tedium!

When you are Worship Leading You Just Can’t be Flat!

There are many reasons why, when we face the potential of worship leading, we can feel down.  It can be as straightforward as coming off a late evening, feeling worn-out, feeling sick or just being very tired, right through to having major events disturbing our sense of joy, things like marriage trouble, the a friend dying, or more commonly a fight with someone in your band just prior to when you are going on.  Trust me, this last one happens more often than you would think!

In my case, because I travel and minister all over the world, jet lag is a big one.  At times like these sheer tiredness can leave you feeling fatigued, lackluster and a bit down or miserable when it comes to leading worship.

Uninspired is often a good description, and as you look around at the others in the worship band, you might recognize that many of them struggle in their skills, and they are looking to you for inspiration… something you feel completely incapable of giving! Maybe they too are fatigued and lethargic.  Perhaps being down and flat is infectious!

What Can You Do About It?

When this happens to me, I pray and asked the Lord to assist.  I realize that, when we are weak, He is strong (2 Cor 12:10).  I realize again that this whole vocation of worship leading is not about me, and how I feel, it’s about Him!  I  step back and take a good, extensive look at myself, and realized that in truth I am merely a servant, not a singer, not a guitarist and definitely not a star!  I recognize that, no matter how I feel inside, I am required to change my way of thinking and continue to serve, no matter what the price.

If you do this, ignoring your own feelings , then the Lord will start to move with magnificent power, firstly in your own heart, and then in the hearts of the singers and musicians.    Whether we use our hands, feet or voices, all of us above all use our hearts, and this is the appropriate attitude to worship leading as a servant.

If you rely fully on the work of the Lord, from the very first song you could feel the presence of the Lord, and His delight at our change of heart, and at our choice to do our best no matter what we felt at that moment.  In our weakness, He shows Himself strong, and we are rewarded with a magnificent and very intimate time of worship leading.

So, fellow worship leaders, I write this highly frank, open and graphic article to motivate you, and to tell you that, even if you are feeling downhearted, fatigued and uninspired, you are not alone.  All worship leaders feel this at some stage, all of us labor to keep the flame of inspiration burning bright, and we all need to be reminded that worship leading is never about us and our talents or enthusiasm, it is, and always ever will be, first and foremost about HIM!

Worship Leading MistakesThis is an amazing worship leader podcast where we take a close look at the 17 most common worship leading mistakes.  Now, we all know we make mistakes, perhaps some more than others, and that for many of us the mistakes we make we can cover over to a large degree (at least we hope we can!).  But how about those really big ones that will ruin worship for the day, and which some people make over and over again without even realizing it!  Well, that’s what this pivotal pod is all about!

Eliminate the Big worship Leading Mistakes

Getting rid of the really big worship leading mistakes might make all the difference to your ministry.  Are you finding that your worship leading is lacking power?  Well it might be because, without even realizing it, you are making some of these classic mistakes, and if you can identify them and change the way you are worship leading it could make all the difference.

So what worship leading mistakes are we talking about?  Well, you might just have to download the pod and have a listen, but I can reveal that we cover everything about these classic mistakes, from song selection through to the way we deliver the ministry.  This is very frank, very real and quite confronting, so settle back, listen and please keep an open mind.  By the way, we sourced this list, so it is not just our ideas but those of other worship leaders who have recognized the same trends (but we do agree with them!).  Have a listen and email or leave a comment about what you think, and how you can eliminate these worship leading mistakes from your church.

So kick back, grab a cup of tea or coffee and enjoy a few crazy minutes with the team that always loves and supports you, even if we are quick to point out mistakes (we’re not really!!!!).
