Worship Leading not drivingWhen it comes to worship leading, we all want to do a great job leading an inspiring our congregations into deep worship experience. However, some congregations are a lot more difficult than others to lead, and so many zealous worship leaders find themselves driving their people rather than leading them!

Signs of Driving Your Audience

One of the key signs that you are driving an audience rather than leading them involves you as a worship leader carefully observing the people you are ministering to. You need to know that your congregation is with you every step of the way when you are worship leading, and one of the classic worship leading mistakes occurs when the band and singers are lost in worship, but the congregation is simply standing there looking at them.

As a general rule, if people are looking at their watches or checking their cell phones you have lost your audience. You are no longer leading them but attempting to drive them into worship, and they clearly don’t want to be there!

Another sure sign of driving your audience or driving them occurs when you are constantly imploring them to greater heights of worship. It is okay to verbally encourage them from time to time, but when this is a constant thing you would do well to stop, look at yourself and what you are doing, and ask if you are actually leading them!

Signs of Leading Your Congregation

Successful praise and worship leading is not about whether you worship, but whether your congregation follows you into worship. A sure sign that you are leading your people successfully is when you can see the majority of the audience lost in worship, with their eyes closed, hands raised and maybe even a smile on their faces.

Another sign that you are leading your congregation occurs when open worship explodes spontaneously from the Somme you are single, rather than being forced or concocted by the worship leader. When you sense God’s power and anointing taking control of the meeting, you can be sure that you are worship leading rather than driving.

So how can you lead rather than drive your audience every week?

One of the best things you can do is to get some good worship leader training, because the more training you have the more skilled you will be at directing and leading an audience deeper into the presence of God. Another thing you can do is to spend more time with the Lord, because your worship leading ability will be directly dependent on the vitality of your personal relationship with God.

And if you find yourself driving your audience, and all of us do from time to time, this is the time to step back and let God take over. Trusting His leading can change the situation where you are driving people into worship they don’t want to be a part of into authentic, powerful and life changing worship leading.

Learning about engaging your congregation is timely topic for this worship leader podcast.  So often I see worship leaders failing to connect with their congregations, and the people just sit and watch the worship team do their thing, like an audience rather than a group of God’s people ready to plug in, engage and meet with their Lord!

If you are having trouble getting your congregation to come along with you in worship, this podcast is packed full of great ideas on how you can actually start connecting with and engaging your people.  Very practical, lots of cool ideas and, as always, heaps of fun to be had!  It’s all here in this action packedworship leader podcast episode!

If you are searching for worship leading tips then chances are that you are dealing with an unresponsive audience. If you have been worship leading for a while then you are sure to have encountered such a congregation and, because every group is different, it is often hard to figure out how to deal with the situation. What works with one group may not work with another or even in your specific situation, however there are some general worship leading tips which can make a difference when facing an unresponsive audience.

The Basic Worship Leading Tips

Firstly, the basic worship leading tips apply in almost every situation. You need to look at the type of material you are using in the service, and in particular the type of songs. Are there too many new ones? Are there too many old ones? Are you offering the type of songs you like rather than what your audience likes?

Next, have a look at your presentation and musicians or singers and ask yourself if this is conducive to worship in your church. Is your band too loud and turning some members off? Are they too soft so that people do not have to sing enthusiastically to hear themselves? Are they in their own little world and completely misreading or even worse ignoring responses from the audience? Are they hitting poor notes and sounding awful. One of the easiest to apply worship leading tips is to make sure that the sound is pleasant, well played and well sung in addition to being well presented. If you do this, people will enjoy it and be more inclined to relax and truly worship, and this is one of the most important worship leading tips to learn.

Worship Leading Tips for On Stage

If you are leading praise and worship in your church, one of the best worship leading tips I can offer is to minimize your talking in between songs. Many feel that they have to preach a mini sermon, especially if there is something going wrong! Real worship relies more on the Spirit’s ability rather than our talking ability, so if you want to see God do something awesome try talking less and letting the Spirit work in hearts more.

That being said, saying the right thing at the right moment can also be effective. Playing an inspiring musical interlude is another way in which you can affect the mood of the meeting and open people’s hearts. So one of the most effective worship leading tips is to be open to innovative and inspired changes in music and mood, rather than being locked into a set format. I mean, if you decide to do the chorus twice at the end of the song, and the Holy Spirit is about to take off on the 3rd time through, if you follow the plan you will miss out on the blessings! Be open, be innovative and be flexible enough to change depending on the direction of the worship time, and be brave enough to follow these worship leading tips.

The Ultimate Worship Leading Tips

Worship Leading TipsIf you face an unresponsive audience, the best worship leading tips I have shared above may fall flat if you are unprepared as a worship leader. So the ultimate worship leading tips are to be prepared in heart (walking close to the Lord and in close fellowship with Him) and to be prepared in ability (by studying and learning about worship leading). Having a solid relationship with the Lord and a solid background in the theories and principles of leading will have you fully prepared for a less than responsive audience.

In the end, your calling as a worship leader is about serving, not about the glory and success (Mark 10:45). If you approach every opportunity to lead as an opportunity to serve, then you can do all you can and leave the rest of it to the Holy Spirit. Whether they respond, raise their hands or sit there in stormy silence, one of the best worship leading tips is to keep serving, which means you keep going and do your best regardless of the results.

So next time you lead worship in church, apply these worship leading tips, then commit your ways to the Lord and see what He can do with an unresponsive audience!

Top 5 Worship Leader Tips

If you’re just starting out in worship leading, the right of worship leader tips could make a huge impact on your ministry.  The problem is, getting useful worship leader tips out of experienced leaders can often be extremely difficult, because they do not want to reveal the secrets that allow them to lead praise and worship successfully.

The Top 5 Worship Leader Tips

I have been leading worship in small and large meetings around the world for the last 25 years, and I believe it is time those of us who are experienced encourage others who are following!  The purpose of this article is to share with you my top five worship leader tips, ideas and techniques that I have proven again and again on stage, in hope that it will encourage you in your ministry if you’re just starting out.

Worship Leader TipsWorship Leader Tips 1: Choose Your Songs Carefully

One of the best worship leader tips I can offer is that you choose your songs carefully.  One of the classic mistakes young worship leaders make is that they choose songs that they like, rather than ones that the audience enjoys.  Only ever introduce one new song, and make sure all the other songs are known and loved by your congregation.  In fact, even if you lead poorly, if you have chosen the right songs that people love and enjoy (and know) then you’ll be popular!

Worship Leader Tips 2: Keep to Time

If you want to avoid criticism one of the best worship leader tips I can offer is that you keep to time.  To go grossly over time is disrespectful of your pastor and also your congregation, but young worship leaders often get so caught up in what they are doing they think that everybody is enjoying it as much as they are.  So whether the worship goes well or badly, always make sure you keep to your allotted time.

Worship Leader Tips 3: Blend Your Songs into a Continuous Experience

Blending your worship songs into each other provides a continuous experience for your listeners, and one that they will enjoy far more than a series of stop-start songs.  If you are competent musicians, try to select songs in a similar key that allowed them to be run together, and if all goes well your audience will lose themselves in worship!

Worship Leader Tips 4: Read your Audience

One of the most important worship leader tips I can offer is actually a skill that you need to develop.  It is important that you learn to read your audience, so you can see if they are with you or not as you worship, and you can encourage them along the way.  Many novice worship leaders are worshiping on stage, but the congregation are yawning and checking their phones!  You need to read your audience and lead you audience into a deeper experience of God.

Worship Leader Tips 5: Get Some Training

One of the most important worship leader tips is to get some training.  There is some great worship leader training courses, and many of these are far less expensive than attending a conference!  However, because you can read the material many times over and slowly but surely apply to your own ministry, the right sort of worship leading training can make a vast difference in your ministry.

As a long-term and experienced leader, I have many ideas and techniques that I’ve made available to the young worship leader.  If you take the time to study the right material, you can supercharge your leading by incorporating the right worship leader tips into your own ministry.
