worship leadingIf you have been worship leading for a while, then you are going to face this at some point… it’s Sunday morning, it’s early on and you do not feel well, however you have a responsibility to the Lord, the Pastor and the church to be leading worship, and doing it skillfully.  Now, it doesn’t matter how long you have been leading, even experienced worship leaders confront days like this!  So I would like to cheer those of you who meet the week in, week out, every Sunday, 2 or more services that we very much require to make sure does not turn into a tedium!

When you are Worship Leading You Just Can’t be Flat!

There are many reasons why, when we face the potential of worship leading, we can feel down.  It can be as straightforward as coming off a late evening, feeling worn-out, feeling sick or just being very tired, right through to having major events disturbing our sense of joy, things like marriage trouble, the a friend dying, or more commonly a fight with someone in your band just prior to when you are going on.  Trust me, this last one happens more often than you would think!

In my case, because I travel and minister all over the world, jet lag is a big one.  At times like these sheer tiredness can leave you feeling fatigued, lackluster and a bit down or miserable when it comes to leading worship.

Uninspired is often a good description, and as you look around at the others in the worship band, you might recognize that many of them struggle in their skills, and they are looking to you for inspiration… something you feel completely incapable of giving! Maybe they too are fatigued and lethargic.  Perhaps being down and flat is infectious!

What Can You Do About It?

When this happens to me, I pray and asked the Lord to assist.  I realize that, when we are weak, He is strong (2 Cor 12:10).  I realize again that this whole vocation of worship leading is not about me, and how I feel, it’s about Him!  I  step back and take a good, extensive look at myself, and realized that in truth I am merely a servant, not a singer, not a guitarist and definitely not a star!  I recognize that, no matter how I feel inside, I am required to change my way of thinking and continue to serve, no matter what the price.

If you do this, ignoring your own feelings , then the Lord will start to move with magnificent power, firstly in your own heart, and then in the hearts of the singers and musicians.    Whether we use our hands, feet or voices, all of us above all use our hearts, and this is the appropriate attitude to worship leading as a servant.

If you rely fully on the work of the Lord, from the very first song you could feel the presence of the Lord, and His delight at our change of heart, and at our choice to do our best no matter what we felt at that moment.  In our weakness, He shows Himself strong, and we are rewarded with a magnificent and very intimate time of worship leading.

So, fellow worship leaders, I write this highly frank, open and graphic article to motivate you, and to tell you that, even if you are feeling downhearted, fatigued and uninspired, you are not alone.  All worship leaders feel this at some stage, all of us labor to keep the flame of inspiration burning bright, and we all need to be reminded that worship leading is never about us and our talents or enthusiasm, it is, and always ever will be, first and foremost about HIM!

Worship Leading MistakesBefore we recorded our latest worship leader podcast, I was thinking about how often we just repeat the same worship leading mistakes.  what prompted me to think about this was that I had just bitten the inside of my mouth… Ouch.  However, the area became inflamed and swollen, and I went on to bit the exact same spot 7 times in a row!!!!

Super Ouch!!!

Sometimes We Repeat the Same Worship Leading Mistakes Too!

Like me biting my mouth over and over again, it seems we often repeat the same mistakes, even if they result in pain and hardship!  What in the world prompts us to do this?  Do we think that if we do it often enough, maybe we will get a different outcome?  According to Einstein, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result.”  If we are doing things in our worship leading that do not seem to be resulting in deeper worship, maybe it is time to stop and have a good look at ourselves, and maybe even pray for wisdom!

Why We Often Repeat the Same Worship Leading Mistakes

There are several reasons why we repeat our previous mistakes, and no, it does not necessarily mean that we are actually insane.  Here’s a few that spring to mind…

1. Tradition

Sometimes we just keep doing the things we always have because that’s what we have always done!  Of that’s what our fathers, or their fathers did.  Some of our frequent worship leading mistakes are due to the inability to bring change.  What worked 50 years ago does not necessarily work today.  Yet the Word of God is unchanging and lives forever, not our man-made traditions.  Now, not all traditions are bad, please do not get me wrong on this, but some of them are at best counterproductive and at worst destructive to modern worship leading.

2. It Has Worked Before

We try it once, and things seem to work well.  We then figure that if we do the same thing every time, we force the Lord to show up.  Folks, it simply is not true!  Some of the biggest worship leading mistakes I have ever seen have been based on something that once worked, but has been done to death!

This is especially true of open worship, where as much as we want to be free and creative, we cannot help ourselves by arranging bouts of spontaneity in advance!  Be wary of thinking something will work because it did in times past.  If you try it once or twice and things don’t seem anointed, then don’t go back to do more of it hoping things will change!

3.  Habit

Habits can be good or bad, and sometimes it is really hard to kick a habit.  Sometimes our worship leading mistakes are repeated simply because we are familiar with doing things a certain way, and we lead worship almost on autopilot.

4. Panic

If things go wrong we often panic, and when we panic we often fall back on things we are familiar with, some of which may be worship leading mistakes.  We can combat this in two ways: react in a more prayerful manner, and avoid the cause of the panic by rehearsing and working harder to get things right.

Training Helps Reduce Worship Leading Mistakes

The right type of training can help to reduce those persistent worship leading mistakes.  It allows us to become more confident as we lead, and more able to handle any potential problems or difficulties.  The whole idea of worship leader training is that the techniques and tips we teach become automatic, so that if things go wrong you are able to handle the situation in a godly and capable way.

So please, don’t keep biting the inside of your mouth over and over again!  It hurts, it ulcerates and it is just plain silly!  Decide now to not be content making the same worship leading mistakes, and ask the Lord what steps you need to take to avoid them in the future.

Worship Leading Needs Support

Worship Leading Techniques are important if you are going to lead effective praise and worship.  Like it or not, you will use a variety of worship leading techniques that you have learned along the way and these will most often add to your abilities rather than provide a refined yet less than inspire performance.

Why We Avoid Learning Worship Leading Techniques

Worship Leading Techniques in churchAs leaders of worship many of us are hesitant about obtaining training because we fear that the worship leading techniques we learn will detract rather than add to our overall ministry for the Lord.  In fact, the opposite is true!  Learning the right worship leading techniques actually allows us to explode into a realm of freedom in the Spirit because we can concentrate on Him as we minister rather than on the basic music and singing disciplines.

It’s a bit like driving a car.  When you first started there was so much to learn that you wondered if you would ever be able to drive, but once you learned the basic techniques and were able to do them on autopilot, you can then drive a car, talk to a friend, listen to the radio and sometimes text (illegally) all at once.

So learning worship leading techniques is better for your power, flow and anointing when you are leading worship!

The Top 5 Worship Leading Techniques

With this in mind here are my Top 5 worship leading techniques that you can apply quickly and effectively, starting this Sunday!

Avoiding excessive talking:  This includes praying, anecdotes and calls for people to do things like stand, kneel or raise hands.  You will be more effective if you let God deal with this rather than filling every gap with your own voice (John 3:30)

Choose songs people know:  A classic mistake is choosing songs you like and teaching people new songs constantly.  Throw in a few songs they don’t know and watch people relax and enjoy worship.

Flow songs together:  Flowing songs together is one of the best worship leading techniques I know, making the worship time a continuum rather than a stop-start affair.  This gives people a smooth experience and allows the Lord to move in their hearts.

Go up keys:  Raising the key of a song part way through is another one of my favourite worship leading techniques.  Going up a key makes everyone stretch a little more and can lift a worship meeting very effectively.

Voices Only:  Stopping instruments and using vocals alone is another brilliant idea!  If done well this can have a huge impact on the entire praise and worship service.

Learn More Worship Leading Techniques

For more information on these and other worship leading techniques please feel free to check out the rest of the website.  We have great training where you can learn loads of worship leading techniques like these easily be able to use them, starting this Sunday!

The Hard Way to Learn Worship Leader Tips

Like most professions, there is an easy and a hard way to obtain the information you desire to improve your abilities.  One costs a small amount of money and the other is totally free,, and as you grow older and gain experience you begin to recognize that it is most often worth paying a small amount of money for something that helps you learn information quickly and effectively.

The hard way is also the “free” way, but unlike the freeway you drive on it is not the fastest way to learn.  It involves you spending hours and hours surfing the internet trying to find free information that is exactly what you need to lead worship more successfully.  If your time is worth anything, this is the hardest and least effective way to glean worship leader tips.

However, many people cannot afford to pay money to streamline their learning experience.  That is why we offer free worship leader tips in the form of some great ebooks, and also have a blog and a crazy but information filled podcast!  By listening and reading you can begin to gather worship leader tips, but it is not in any particular order or set up in a way that will help you to start applying the information.

The Easy way to Learn Worship Leader Tips

Worship Leader TipsFor a small outlay you can take the easy way of learning worship leader tips, which comes in a succinct, easy to understand and very easy to apply form.  This means that you do not need to spend hours and hours scouring the internet to obtain choice worship leader tips from people who have been leading worship for decades, in churches and at huge meetings all around the world.  The information is readily available and easy to understand and apply, meaning that you should see an improvement in your worship leading ability within a few days.

It also is usually extremely comprehensive, coving everything from band and team member management, song arrangements, song selections, sound, guitars, drums rosters, relationships to the pastor and a whole host of other areas that can make you into a world class worship leader!

[wp-backlink-search]

If you are searching for worship leading tips then chances are that you are dealing with an unresponsive audience. If you have been worship leading for a while then you are sure to have encountered such a congregation and, because every group is different, it is often hard to figure out how to deal with the situation. What works with one group may not work with another or even in your specific situation, however there are some general worship leading tips which can make a difference when facing an unresponsive audience.

The Basic Worship Leading Tips

Firstly, the basic worship leading tips apply in almost every situation. You need to look at the type of material you are using in the service, and in particular the type of songs. Are there too many new ones? Are there too many old ones? Are you offering the type of songs you like rather than what your audience likes?

Next, have a look at your presentation and musicians or singers and ask yourself if this is conducive to worship in your church. Is your band too loud and turning some members off? Are they too soft so that people do not have to sing enthusiastically to hear themselves? Are they in their own little world and completely misreading or even worse ignoring responses from the audience? Are they hitting poor notes and sounding awful. One of the easiest to apply worship leading tips is to make sure that the sound is pleasant, well played and well sung in addition to being well presented. If you do this, people will enjoy it and be more inclined to relax and truly worship, and this is one of the most important worship leading tips to learn.

Worship Leading Tips for On Stage

If you are leading praise and worship in your church, one of the best worship leading tips I can offer is to minimize your talking in between songs. Many feel that they have to preach a mini sermon, especially if there is something going wrong! Real worship relies more on the Spirit’s ability rather than our talking ability, so if you want to see God do something awesome try talking less and letting the Spirit work in hearts more.

That being said, saying the right thing at the right moment can also be effective. Playing an inspiring musical interlude is another way in which you can affect the mood of the meeting and open people’s hearts. So one of the most effective worship leading tips is to be open to innovative and inspired changes in music and mood, rather than being locked into a set format. I mean, if you decide to do the chorus twice at the end of the song, and the Holy Spirit is about to take off on the 3rd time through, if you follow the plan you will miss out on the blessings! Be open, be innovative and be flexible enough to change depending on the direction of the worship time, and be brave enough to follow these worship leading tips.

The Ultimate Worship Leading Tips

Worship Leading TipsIf you face an unresponsive audience, the best worship leading tips I have shared above may fall flat if you are unprepared as a worship leader. So the ultimate worship leading tips are to be prepared in heart (walking close to the Lord and in close fellowship with Him) and to be prepared in ability (by studying and learning about worship leading). Having a solid relationship with the Lord and a solid background in the theories and principles of leading will have you fully prepared for a less than responsive audience.

In the end, your calling as a worship leader is about serving, not about the glory and success (Mark 10:45). If you approach every opportunity to lead as an opportunity to serve, then you can do all you can and leave the rest of it to the Holy Spirit. Whether they respond, raise their hands or sit there in stormy silence, one of the best worship leading tips is to keep serving, which means you keep going and do your best regardless of the results.

So next time you lead worship in church, apply these worship leading tips, then commit your ways to the Lord and see what He can do with an unresponsive audience!

If you are involved in church worship then chances are you are searching for some worship leading tips to help you do a better job.  While a few worship leading tips here and there will not replace a full worship training course.

The Top 5 Worship Leading Tips

5. Don’t Overcomplicate Arrangements- Some of the best and most loved songs of all time are simple, yet many modern praise and worship songs are so incredibly complex!  Try to keep your arrangements simple and you will find your musicians able to play them, and your congregation able to sing them!

4. Choose Songs that are Well Known- Your role is not to teach new songs.  This is one of the best worship leading tips you will hear: use songs that your congregation know and love.  Worship will be easier, more powerful (because they will not need to read the words) and you can still introduce new material, preferably slowly.

Worship Leading Tips3. Blend the Songs Together- You want the worship experience to be a continuous, wonderful experience, not a stop-start, clunking experience.

2. Go Up Keys to Go Up in Intensity- Modulating up a key in a song makes everyone stretch, sing louder and raises the intensity of the meeting, so do not be afraid to go up a key.  Of all the worship leading tips I am offering here, this one is the most practical for seeing an immediate effect in your worship leading.

1. Head Towards Higher Praise and Worship- I always try and start with songs about ourselves and our feelings, needs, desires, etc.  As I head through the worship time I try and culminate with a song focused on the Lord and solely on worshipping Him!

Worship Leading Tips Don’t Replace the Right Heart

Remember, these worship leading tips are not an alternative to having a right heart and a right attitude before the Lord.  They are techniques, yes, but they are most effective when coupled with a humble and serving heart.  As a leader you need to be open to not only the leading of the Holy Spirit, but also to correction from your pastor and great ideas from your team.  Use the worship leading tips but don’t forget to keep your heart right!

The King of All Worship Leading Tips

The ultimate of all of the worship leading tips I could share with you (along with keeping your walk right with the Lord) is to get some training, whether you are experienced or not.  I have been leading worship for years, yet I always try and remain open and humbly teachable so that my journey does not plateau or peter out but continues to grow in strength and power.

I am sure you want to become the very best praise and worship leader you can be.  Stay humble, stay open and stay close to the Lord.  Get some training as often as you can and apply  these worship leading tips to better your chosen and anointed gifting.

Top 5 Worship Leader Tips

If you’re just starting out in worship leading, the right of worship leader tips could make a huge impact on your ministry.  The problem is, getting useful worship leader tips out of experienced leaders can often be extremely difficult, because they do not want to reveal the secrets that allow them to lead praise and worship successfully.

The Top 5 Worship Leader Tips

I have been leading worship in small and large meetings around the world for the last 25 years, and I believe it is time those of us who are experienced encourage others who are following!  The purpose of this article is to share with you my top five worship leader tips, ideas and techniques that I have proven again and again on stage, in hope that it will encourage you in your ministry if you’re just starting out.

Worship Leader TipsWorship Leader Tips 1: Choose Your Songs Carefully

One of the best worship leader tips I can offer is that you choose your songs carefully.  One of the classic mistakes young worship leaders make is that they choose songs that they like, rather than ones that the audience enjoys.  Only ever introduce one new song, and make sure all the other songs are known and loved by your congregation.  In fact, even if you lead poorly, if you have chosen the right songs that people love and enjoy (and know) then you’ll be popular!

Worship Leader Tips 2: Keep to Time

If you want to avoid criticism one of the best worship leader tips I can offer is that you keep to time.  To go grossly over time is disrespectful of your pastor and also your congregation, but young worship leaders often get so caught up in what they are doing they think that everybody is enjoying it as much as they are.  So whether the worship goes well or badly, always make sure you keep to your allotted time.

Worship Leader Tips 3: Blend Your Songs into a Continuous Experience

Blending your worship songs into each other provides a continuous experience for your listeners, and one that they will enjoy far more than a series of stop-start songs.  If you are competent musicians, try to select songs in a similar key that allowed them to be run together, and if all goes well your audience will lose themselves in worship!

Worship Leader Tips 4: Read your Audience

One of the most important worship leader tips I can offer is actually a skill that you need to develop.  It is important that you learn to read your audience, so you can see if they are with you or not as you worship, and you can encourage them along the way.  Many novice worship leaders are worshiping on stage, but the congregation are yawning and checking their phones!  You need to read your audience and lead you audience into a deeper experience of God.

Worship Leader Tips 5: Get Some Training

One of the most important worship leader tips is to get some training.  There is some great worship leader training courses, and many of these are far less expensive than attending a conference!  However, because you can read the material many times over and slowly but surely apply to your own ministry, the right sort of worship leading training can make a vast difference in your ministry.

As a long-term and experienced leader, I have many ideas and techniques that I’ve made available to the young worship leader.  If you take the time to study the right material, you can supercharge your leading by incorporating the right worship leader tips into your own ministry.
