Learning how to lead worship in a small group is often different to worship leading in a large group, yet it uses many of the same principles.  In fact, I recommend that young leaders learn how to lead worship in a small group first, before stepping out in front of the whole congregation only to find mistakes are being made.

The Advantage of How to Lead Worship in a Small Group

How to Lead WorshipThe big advantage of learning how to lead worship in a smaller group of people is that any mistakes you make are only among a small group.  will result in mistakes, wrong decisions and sometimes embarrassing moments, and it is far better for these to be done among a small group of people you know rather than a large group.

It is in this small group setting that you have the chance to try things, explore techniques and ideas and form close relationships between singers and musicians.  The penalty for one of these ideas backfiring is far less when you are before a small group rather than the entire church.

How to Lead Worship for Smaller Numbers of People

While many worship leading techniques are the for every size audience, there are some specific ideas you should think about as you learn how to lead worship to small groups.

Go For Intimacy:  I find that loud, rocky music which works well in a larger group frequently falls flat in a small group, where you most often have less instruments and no amplification.  When learning how to lead worship, I recommend doing one faster song maximum, or even skipping straight to the more personal, intimate worship songs.

Go for Flow:  In a small group, especially if you only have one or two guitars, flowing between songs, linking songs and generally creating a wonderful, deep, intimate and special atmosphere is easier than in a large group with lots of instruments and noise.

Learn How to Lead Worship with Integrity:  In a small group most people know you well, and so if your worship leading is performance orientated, or fake, they will see through you immediately.  If you lead honestly with integrity you will learn how to press into the Lord and truly lead others to a deeper walk with Him.

When you learn how to lead worship in a small group, much of the bravado of the big meeting falls away.  There are no sound checks, no amplifiers and no big band to manage.  It’s just you, a guitar or two and your small audience who knows you well, and this strips away a lot of the performance traits and exposes the real you!

Starting your worship leader career in a small group might seem to be wasting time, but in reality it is setting the foundation for a powerful and effective worship leader.  You can learn your style, explore new ideas and try new techniques without fear of major embarrassment and without the complications that big congregations bring.

Learning how to lead worship in a small group is a great place for a humble, powerful and mighty worship leading career to start!

Learning how to lead worship effectively is not an easy task.  You can watch all the DVDs, imitate famous leaders and search the internet yet still not really confidently learn how to lead worship, so where does a young man or woman start in their quest to become a powerful worship leader in their church?

Learn How to Lead Worship by Study

How to Lead WorshipAll the good intentions and humility in the world cannot take the place of some basic training.  Learning how to construct songs, arrange music, go up keys, blend songs and choose wisely are basics that every potential praise and worship leader should learn.  These can give you the raw materials with which to build a successful ministry.

They are not, however, the power and anointing of God!  They are simply the tools needed, the framework if you will, that you can use to allow the Holy Spirit to move powerfully in your congregation.

Some feel that training is not necessary if you really long to serve, but I would disagree.  Your pastor has trained to preach, your keyboard player has learned to play and your local doctor has hopefully trained in his profession.  Don’t gloss over the fact that you have things to learn with a spiritual veneer.  If your pastor has trained in his skills, surely you should do the same in yours if you want to learn how to lead worship properly!

Learn How to Lead Worship by Relationship

The most effective way to learn how to lead worship is to sit with and under a successful worship leader.  Part of this relationship is the transfer of information, much of it not revealed in any other way.  Most successful worship leaders have some tips, techniques or ideas which they don’t reveal, but spending time with them can show you how to lead worship in a similar way to them.

As a successful worship leader for over 20 years in churches around the world, I confess that I do not have time to mentor all the worship leader I am in touch with through our website.

I cannot sit with them, discuss issues with them or show them exactly how to lead worship in their context and their church.  However I can and have written down everything I can think of about how to lead worship, from how to choose songs right through to how you react to adversity.  Teaching can reveal lots of things like how to link songs, blend songs, arrangements, relationships in the team and a host of other areas that I have learned over 20 or so years.

So get some training and establish a relationship with an already successful worship leader if you really want to learn how to lead worship effectively.

Lead Worship

As a worship leader, one of the hardest things to do is to learn how to lead praise and worship when you are feeling down.  I know we read in the scriptures about Paul and Silas praising God in prison, but if you have had a tough week, a personal tragedy or struggle with depression it is entirely normal to struggle also with leading others closer to the Lord.

Yet if we really are servants we need to learn how to lead worship no matter how we feel, whether happy or sad, high or low, depressed or rejoicing.  Our calling is a noble one but it can also be a difficult one because most of us are emotional beings.

How to Lead Praise and Worship When You Are Empty

When you are on top of the world it is easier to lead your team forth in triumph.  However, if you are feeling low for any reason it is much harder, so it is important that we learn how to effectively lead praise and worship in those circumstances.

The most important thing to think about if you are feeling down is that, while we are weak, He is strong.  Real faith is there whether we have the feelings or not, so if we are empty and lifeless it is a real opportunity to let Christ shine through us.  As John said, “He must become greater, I must become less.” (John 3:30)

When we lead our congregations at times we are so empty and we have nothing to offer.  It is here that we may discover a true secret to how we can really tap into the depths of our walk with the Lord and our worship of Him.

Leading When You Are Angry

how to lead praise and worshipSometimes we may simply be feeling angry, maybe at something that happened on the way to church or even with someone in the band, singers or sound.  In these circumstances we need to avoid feeling righteous, or even right, forgive and move on.  I use to have a sound guy who would explode minutes before every service, ruining the atmosphere and setting everyone on edge.  You cannot budget for these things, but you need to do all you can to address the situation with grace and love, then forgive and move on.  More is at stake here beyond your pride!

Worship Leading in Any Circumstances

If we are to become true servants of the Lord, the Pastor and our congregations, we need to be brave enough and humble enough to lay situations, feelings and hurts aside, and get on with the job of leading praise and worship.  This is part of our challenge, but also our joy!

If we want to be the best at what we do, we must not collapse under the weight of sadness, emptiness, anger or circumstances.  We must learn how to lead praise and worship by resting in His strength and allowing Him to lift us above the circumstances and feelings.

As I sit here thinking about how to lead praise and worship in a traditional church I am returning from a ministry trip to Sri Lanka.  Many of the churches we ministered to there were traditional churches struggling to try and find a blend between the older people in the church who love tradition and the younger ones who want to sing modern praise and worship music.  If you are in the church that is struggling with the same issues, it is important that you learn how to lead praise and worship in a way that satisfies both sides of the equation, and does so with sensitivity and true godliness.

How To Lead Praise and Worship That Satisfies Almost Everyone

You may consider that it is impossible to lead worship that satisfies almost  everyone, but I can tell you from experience it is achievable.  The most important thing is that you strive always to lead in a way that unites people rather than divides people.

Division is common among God’s people, especially when it comes to the area of music and worship.  On one side, you usually have the older congregation members who want to sing the hymns that they have been familiar with for decades, playing in the way that they have always been played with an organ, and that the more temperate volume.  On the other side you have the young people and increasingly the middle-aged, who wants to worship the Lord in a way that fits with their culture using music that represents their generation.

Trying to blend both sides of the worship spectrum may seem like an impossible dream, but after many years and many mistakes I believe that I found the right solution.

How To Lead Praise and Worship With Sensitivity

how to lead praise and worshipThe first thing to think about when you consider worship leading is sensitivity… to both sides of the generation gap.  If you produce loud, contemporary worship you are saying to the older generation, “you have no value anymore.”  If you play hymns exclusively, you are conveying to the younger people that their opinions and culture is unimportant.

A wise worship leader is one who can cater for both sides of the church, exhibiting a spirit of love and understanding for both the old and the young.  Part of learning how to effectively lead praise and worship is dealing with conflict as a leader and you need to make sure that both protagonists feel that their opinions are heard, even though you may not act upon these opinions.  This means that any complaints about the music being too loud, too rocky, too old or too boring must be listened to and considered when you are deciding how to lead praise and worship with sensitivity.

Leading Worship For Unity

Worship music can be a powerful force for unity or an amazingly destructive force within the church, especially within a more traditional congregation.  I have often witnessed angry words and even people leaving the church because of dissatisfaction with the worship service, and we must do our best as worship leaders to make sure that this never happens.

Many churches try to satisfy the opposing sides by having a period of contemporary worship at the start of the service, led by the young people using drums, electric guitars and so on, while reserving songs for worship within the service for hymns played on an organ.  While this may be an attempt to appease both sides, what it is really doing is creating a spirit of disunity, with each side recognizing ‘our music and their music’!

I believe that the best way to unite the old and the young, the traditionalists and the modernists, is to have the worship band incorporate hymns into both the contemporary worship time in the service and throughout the entire service.

One worship leader asked me if the elderly reacted badly to the suggestion, offended that their music is not being played on an organ.  My experience is that this is not the case but rather the opposite occurs, where the older people see the younger ones embracing their teams and their type of music and making it their own.  Most often this brings great joy to the more traditional believers, so you can learn how to lead praise and worship as a source of unity in the church rather than using music to polarize church members.

So, worship leaders, it is possible to unite both the traditionalists and the more modern members of your congregation!  The most important thing is that you learn how to lead praise and worship with sensitivity while promoting unity across all age groups in your church.

If you want to learn how to lead praise and worship that flows there are some things that you can do to encourage this.  One of the most common problems I see in many worship leaders is that the service does not flow naturally and gently from song to song, either because of the church service format all because of the leaders in experience.

How To Lead Praise and Worship by Programming the Church Service

One of the most significant barriers to learning how to lead can be the church service structure.  Many churches see the music as punctuation around the other areas of the service, so the church service program allows only one or two songs to be sung in a sequence before the flow is broken up by other activities, such as announcements, the offering, prayer, missionary spots, and so on.

If you want to learn effective worship  leading that really flows, the first step is to approach the pastor about the format of the meeting.  Ask him if he would mind combining all of the above listed activities into one particular place in the service, allowing you to run three or four songs together in worship.  This simple change in format can change the way you lead praise and worship very significantly.

Blending Songs

how to lead praise and worshipOne of the key elements in learning how to effectively lead praise and worship lies in song selection.  If you select songs in a similar key, or songs that are easily able to be blended together, then you will be going a long way towards a worship service which flows naturally from song to song.  This can transform your church because they would no longer be singing a selection of songs that they will be able to flow from song to song and enjoy an entire worship experience.  Learning how to do this effectively is one of the great keys in learning how to lead praise and worship in an anointed way.

Speaking Less

One of the most frequent problems I see with inexperienced leaders who are learning is that they speak too much.  If it is not going well they speak to the audience, in telling them to get involved or praying with them.  Please do not misunderstand, I am not saying it is wrong to speak during the worship service.

However, my experience is that as you grow in your ministry you will also learn how to keep quiet and let God draw people’s hearts into the service, not your words.  This allows people to concentrate on the world and not on your thoughts, prayers or opinions.  Most of the truly great worship times I have ever experienced, with myself or someone else leading, have involved little or no talking between songs.

There is much more to learn about how to lead praise and worship effectively, but these three points can start you getting the right direction.

how to lead worshipIf you are looking for ways to learn how to lead worship in three easy steps then this could be one of the most important articles you’ve ever read.  Leading worship in church is a responsible and respected position, but many times people who are inexperienced are thrown into the job, even though they do not know how to lead worship effectively.  So here are a few points on how to lead worship powerfully and effectively, especially if you are inexperienced.

How To Lead Worship Step 1: Prepare Your Material

The first step in learning how to lead is to prepare your material thoughtfully, carefully and most importantly prayerfully.  I cannot emphasize this point enough: if you want to learn how to lead worship in a powerful way that is well received by your audience, you must select your material carefully.

The best praise and worship songs to use, especially when you are learning how to lead praise and worship, are ones that people are familiar with.  This will of course very from church to church, but there are a number of great “standards” that people know and love and will immediately respond to.  Great praise and worship hymns such as “I Surrender All”, “How Great Thou Art” and “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” are often sure fire ways two great worship times, as are more modern songs such as “Shout to the Lord” or “How Great Is Our God.”

The thing to remember when you were learning is that praise and worship leading is more about your audience than it is about your preferences.  One of the biggest mistakes those learning how to lead make is they choose songs they liked that the congregation is unfamiliar with.  If you want to make a great impression lead worship with anointing and great favor, select songs that everybody knows!

Step 2: Prepare Your Worship Team

If you are starting out, you need to prepare your worship team so that they are 100% with you and supportive of what you were doing.  You need to spend time with them not only practicing and playing, but also enjoying coffee and laughs as you build a relationship that will be transferred into your praise and worship leading.

Make sure you spend time preparing your team in prayer, and also explaining to them why you were doing certain songs in the order you have chosen.  As you arrange the songs, try to include their ideas because there is great power in unity, and if you are learning you must also be learning how to lead men and women.

Step 3: Prepare Your Heart

The third area of learning how to lead worship is to prepare your own heart.  You need to spend time with the Lord if you are going to lead others into his presence, and that includes prayer and devotions, reading the word of God and seeking him as to which songs he wants to use in the worship time.

Of all the areas of preparation, if you are learning how to lead worship the most important is to prepare your own heart.  If you have seen in your life, confess it and get it out of the way.  If you have distractions in your life, deal with them and make sure they do not interfere with your mind or your heart as you come to lead worship.

I believe that if you take these three simple steps to heart, you will learn how to lead praise and worship in a powerful and effective way for your congregation.  Remember, you are not just learning how to do it but you are learning how to lead your team, prepare your hearts and direct your audience into a greater worship experience.

So when you have the opportunity, don’t just stand up and sing a series of songs but learn how to lead worship in a powerful, anointed and effective way.
